Now the Sunday Times (23.7.06) has revealed that a confidential Home Office report, Market Soundings, has been leaked. It admits that the security system protecting the card and the National Identity Register (database) could be infiltrated by criminal gangs involved in identity theft and highlights disappearing public support for the scheme. On 17.7.06, Joan Ryan, the minister responsible for ID cards, confirmed the intention to launch ID cards in 2008. Her reassurance to MPs that the scheme is not facing any problems is contradicted by the report. |
