Earlier in the year, a joint Parliamentary committee has slammed the Identity Cards Bill because of threats to privacy and your rights (i.e. suspect legality). A report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) contained a letter it has sent to the Home Secretary Charles Clarke asking for clarification on many areas of concern.
